Queensland’s Environment Department has begun legal action against Xstrata for discharging water into local creeks from its Ernest Henry Gold/Copper mine near Cloncurry.

The company faces further legal action over wheelings and dealings in Chile, where a rival mining company claims Xstrata backed out of a deal at great cost to its competitor.

Xstrata have once again shown how hell bent they on breaking the back of the union and ignoring the legitimate concerns of its workforce.

In unprecedented move the mining giant has tried to ram through a proposed workplace agreement at its Bulga Open Cut mine.

In the dying days of 2009 Xstrata ignored the overwhelming wish to negotiate and posted out hundreds of copies of their proposed agreement workers’ homes.

This was done without consultation with the union or its members.

Over our way the miners at Xstrata's United Colliery in the NSW Hunter Valley have had enough.

They're so frustrated they'll walk off the job tomorrow morning and stop coal production at the mine until Monday morning (September 14).
