Mudgee Mayor Percy Thompson appealed to Xstrata to hang on to the jobs, which would be needed when the new Ulan West mine opens in the next 18 months.

“We met with Xstrata not long ago, they told us about the new underground mine and promised to employ locals.
 
“The next week they tell us they are cutting 120 jobs – it’s a pity they couldn’t have kept those people on.
 
“When you see the amount of money they make a year, it’s not like they’re desperate.”
 
The Xstrata job cuts would have a serious knock-on effect across the whole mid-western shire, which has suffered other job cuts including the closure of the Gulgong Flour Mill this week, said Mayor Thompson.
 
“The biggest impact will be on those people with mortgages, it will be very tough for them to keep their houses.
